Road traffic on your layout

Bring the streets
to life

A drive through the city, a stop by a building and a return to the route. Connect vehicle movement with events on your layout, sensors and the rest of the show.

The vehicle follows the route and stops at the red light.

Driving, stopping and traffic in an urban scene

What you can do

Plan traffic
between buildings

Define where vehicles should go and which events should accompany them.

Driving routes

Organise vehicle traffic using planned sections and points on the layout.

Stopping points

Choose stopping places, such as a bus stop, depot entrance or bay beside a building.

Parking

Include time in a parking space as part of the scene.

Responses to sensors

Connect events to signals from the prepared installation.

Synchronisation with the scene

Combine a vehicle’s journey with lighting, sound or moving parts.

Clear controls

Organise controls by routes, parking areas and traffic zones.

Ideas for your project

How will you use it
on your layout?

01

Bus at a stop

A vehicle stops beside a building and then returns to its route. The stop becomes part of the urban scene.

02

Entering a car park

The route leads to a designated parking space. Choose sensors and controls to suit the vehicle system.

03

A city in motion

Journeys accompany lighting changes and street sounds. Vehicle movement adds to the story of the whole layout.

Devices and connections

From the plan
to the journey

This is a functional arrangement. Guiding, stopping and detecting vehicles depends on the road system and its interface.

What to prepare

Materials and wiring

Vehicles and route system

Choose vehicles, guidance and stopping elements from one compatible system.

Control interface

Connecting to the app requires checking the capabilities of the individual installation.

Sensors and layout elements

Prepare event detection and the lights or mechanisms that should accompany each journey.

Connections and documentation

Prepare your setup

Add signals from the layout

Learn how buttons and sensors trigger the next actions.

Explore sensors

Road-system connections require the manufacturer’s documentation. There is no single electrical diagram for every vehicle system.

Additions for your project

Expand your layout

Hardware, effects and files from the catalogue. Match them to the devices and scenes you are working on.

For museums and exhibitions

Road traffic as part of a city exhibition

Example scenario

On an urban transport model, a bus could stop beside a platform, wait during commentary and return to its route. Street or building lighting highlights the part being explained. This is a scenario for a prepared vehicle system, not a claim that every model car can be controlled in the same way.

What to prepare

Prepare details of the vehicles, guidance method, stopping points and sensors. The system documentation and an available control interface are needed. The plan defines routes, journey order, charging or battery replacement, and access to vehicles. Start by testing one loop with a stop before linking several routes together.

Scope and limits

Road systems handle guidance, braking and position detection differently. Vehicle scale alone does not establish compatibility. Repeatable journeys also depend on the road surface, drive and power condition. The design needs to define what happens if a vehicle stops in an unintended place and how staff restore normal operation.

Questions before implementation

Can vehicles be added to an existing layout?

That depends on road construction, the means of guiding vehicles and the available control method. Photographs and documentation help assess the changes needed. Starting an app does not create road infrastructure or stopping points.

Can vehicle movement be combined with sound and lighting?

Such a show can be planned after confirming the vehicle interface. The action timing and position detection method need to be agreed. Where the actual arrival matters, appropriate feedback is needed rather than a time delay alone.
